Dionel vs. Xynole vs. Dynel - WoodenBoat

Re: Dionel vs. Xynole vs. Dynel. Yes, the design calls for Xynole. It's a plywood boat and doesn't need the rigidity of glass. I've now found a 6oz black Dionel. It seems to be basically the same – a poor man's version of Kevlar. So right now it's a price with shipping question. 08-19-2018, 11:33 AM #4.

What Are The Pros and Cons of Polyester Fabric?

The cons of polyester fabric: Less breathable: the fact polyester is a plastic-based fabric means it has limited breathability. This means it's not suitable for making things like beddings. Moderately flammable material: polyester isn't highly flammable and doesn't always ignite. If it does, however, it tends to stick to your skin and leaves ...

Until recently, all my centerboards were made with solid wood cores covered with laminated marine plywood and finished with Xynole-polyester fabric and epoxy. We power-planed some foil shape onto the solid cores prior to sheathing, but the geometry required to maintain true foil shapes throughout the depth of the boards was impossible to maintain.

Building a Chesapeake Bay Crabbing Skiff: September 2010

So I ordered fiberglass cloth. Actually, that's the wrong word for it, because the fabric I bought is xynole polyester, a more flexible fabric than fiberglas cloth. I received the fabric yesterday, and today I "glassed" the centerboard trunk sides. I would have also covered at least onc side of the centerboard with fabric, but I ran out of epoxy.

Hopefully someone will try the xynole-polyester fabric and let us know how well it tended to stay in place, not bubbling or floating off the wood (it's less dense than epoxy resin). With proper technique, good yet light materials such as Kevlar (Aramid) can be used. Brian.
